OUT OF ENERGY Error Tron USDT What It Means and How to Fix

You try to send USDT on Tron. The wallet shows a message: "OUT OF ENERGY." The transaction fails. Your TRX balance looks fine. What happened?

USDT on Tron is not a simple transfer. TRC20 USDT is a smart contract token, and every send calls TriggerSmartContract - a call that consumes energy. A standard TRX transfer costs bandwidth. USDT costs energy. Different resources, different rules.

The wallet needs energy to execute the contract. If it has none, the network rejects the transaction. That is the OUT OF ENERGY error. It is not a bug. It is the network telling you the resource is missing.

Diagnose the Problem

Go to Tronscan, enter your wallet address, and look at the "Resources" tab. Two numbers matter: bandwidth and energy. For USDT, energy is the critical one. A USDT transfer typically consumes 65,000 to 70,000 energy; if your available energy is below that, the error will appear.

Check your TRX balance too. Tron burns TRX when energy is insufficient, at a burn rate of 0.00042 TRX per 1,000 energy. Short by 65,000 energy? That costs roughly 0.0273 TRX. But the wallet must have that TRX to burn. If the balance is zero or near zero, the transaction cannot proceed even with a burn. Two scenarios cause the error: either you lack the energy outright, or you lack both energy and the TRX to burn for it.

Fix Hierarchy

Four methods work. Start with the cheapest and move down only if needed.

Wait 24 Hours

Energy recovers. Every account gets a daily refresh of frozen resources, and if you staked TRX previously your energy refills after 24 hours. Check the countdown on Tronscan. Sometimes waiting is the fix. This works only if you have staked TRX; if you never staked, waiting does nothing. You start at zero and stay at zero.

Stake More TRX

Staking TRX gives you energy at a ratio of approximately 1 TRX staked for 672 energy, meaning for 65,000 energy you need roughly 97 TRX. That number changes with network congestion - more users means less energy per TRX. Stake inside TronLink or any wallet that supports Tron staking. The energy arrives immediately, but unstaking takes 14 days. Do not stake TRX you need soon.

Rent Energy

Several services let you rent energy: you pay a small fee and someone else's staked TRX provides the energy. The cost is usually lower than buying and staking TRX yourself. Services include TronEnergy and similar providers. Renting works for one transaction. You do not lock up TRX, you do not wait for unstaking, and the rental covers the energy cost while you pay a service fee in TRX.

Burn TRX

If you have TRX but no energy, the network burns TRX to cover the shortfall. At 0.00042 TRX per 1,000 energy, a 65,000 energy transfer burns about 0.0273 TRX - a fraction of a cent. This happens automatically. The wallet shows a warning: "insufficient energy, will burn TRX." Confirm the transaction, the burn happens on chain, and you lose the TRX permanently.

Use Fee Delegation

Some exchanges and services offer fee delegation: they pay the energy cost for you. You send USDT, they cover the resource. This is common on exchanges that want withdrawals to succeed. Fee delegation requires the sender to support it; TronLink does not delegate fees by default. The exchange must set it up on their end. If you are withdrawing from an exchange, check if they offer delegated fees.

What the error is not

The OUT OF ENERGY error is not a network failure, not a frozen wallet, and not a USDT problem. It is a resource allocation problem. You have the token, you have the address, but you lack the fuel to move it.

Screenshots

The error in TronLink appears as a red banner at the top of the transaction confirmation screen. It says "OUT OF ENERGY" in bold, and below it shows your current energy balance and the estimated energy required. The send button stays gray, and the transaction does not submit. Some wallets show the error after you press send; the transaction appears in history as failed with "OUT OF ENERGY" as the reason. Check the transaction hash on Tronscan for the exact error message.

One More Thing

Energy costs vary. A USDT transfer that needed 65,000 energy yesterday might need 68,000 today, because network congestion changes the cost. The wallet estimates energy before the transaction, but that estimate can be wrong. If you are near the boundary, the transaction might fail despite showing enough energy. Check the actual energy used after a failed transaction on Tronscan - it shows the exact consumption. Use that number for your next attempt.

The fix is almost always one of the five methods above. Start with waiting, then move to staking or renting. Burn TRX only if you have no other option. Fee delegation works if the sender supports it. That is the OUT OF ENERGY error: common, fixable, and not a reason to panic.
