Every swap on Tron leaves a trail. The trick is knowing where to look and what to save before you close the browser tab. Tax authorities in most jurisdictions treat crypto-to-crypto swaps as taxable events. If you do not have records, you cannot calculate your gain or loss accurately. Worse, you cannot prove the transaction happened at all.

This page explains what actually happens during a swap on the Tron blockchain, what can go wrong, what you can recover later, and what you must save now.

What actually happens when you swap

You send TRX, USDT, or another TRC-20 token to an address controlled by the swap service. That address is a smart contract or a hot wallet. The service waits for the transaction to confirm on the Tron network. Confirmation usually takes a few seconds. Once confirmed, the service sends the output token to the address you provided.

You do not control the intermediary address. You cannot log into it, pause it, or ask it questions. The service runs that address on your behalf for a few seconds. That is why you need to record what you sent and what you received at the moment the swap completes.

Which swap details should I copy before I close the browser tab

Copy these four things before you navigate away:

  1. The transaction hash (TXID) of the outgoing transaction. This is the 64-character hexadecimal string that identifies your send on the Tron blockchain.
  2. The amount sent and the token type (e.g., 100 USDT).
  3. The amount received and the token type (e.g., 675.43 TRX).
  4. The exchange reference number from the service.

The first three are on-chain. The fourth is off-chain, stored only by the service. If you close the tab without saving the reference number, you may still reconstruct the swap from the blockchain, but it will take more work.

Why an exchange reference number matters months after a trade

The reference number links your swap to the service's internal logs. Those logs contain data that the blockchain does not record: the exact exchange rate you got, the fee deducted, and the time the service processed your order.

If the service cooperates with an audit or a tax inquiry, they can pull your swap history using that reference number. Without it, they have to search by your wallet address, which may return hundreds of transactions you did with other people or services. The reference number is the fastest way to isolate your trade.

How to read a Tron swap on a block explorer

Open a Tron block explorer and paste the transaction hash of your outgoing send. You will see:

  • From address: your wallet.
  • To address: the service's receiving address.
  • Amount: the token and quantity you sent.
  • Token transfer: for TRC-20 tokens, a separate line shows the actual transfer of the token contract, not just TRX.
  • Timestamp: the block time in UTC.
  • Status: "Success" or "Fail".

The explorer does not show the incoming swap. That is a separate transaction from the service's address to yours. You need both hashes to reconstruct the full trade.

Proving a swap happened without a login or account history

Most swap services do not require an account. You send tokens, you receive tokens, and the service forgets you. That works for privacy but makes tax record keeping harder.

You prove the swap by showing two on-chain transactions: the send and the receipt. Both are public and permanent. Anyone can verify them on a block explorer. No login needed. No account history required.

But here is the catch: the block explorer shows the raw data. It does not label "this is a swap at 1.5% fee." You have to interpret it yourself. That is why you should also save the exchange reference number and a screenshot of the swap confirmation page at the time it completed.

What a swap looks like in your Tron wallet transaction list

Open your Tron wallet (TronLink, Trust Wallet, or similar). Go to the transaction history. You will see:

  • A debit transaction for the token you sent. It will show the amount, the destination address, and a timestamp.
  • A credit transaction for the token you received, usually a few seconds later. The source address will be the same service address you sent to, or a different address controlled by the same service.

The wallet transaction list does not link the two transactions. You have to connect them manually by matching the timestamps and amounts. If you swapped 100 USDT for 675 TRX, look for a TRX deposit from the same address or from a known service address.

Reconciling a swap that moved tokens across two different chains

Some swaps move tokens from Tron to another blockchain, say from USDT on Tron to USDC on Ethereum. This is called a cross-chain swap.

The Tron side is straightforward: you send TRC-20 USDT, and the service burns or locks it. The receiving side happens on a different blockchain (Ethereum, BSC, etc.). You will have a separate transaction hash on that second chain.

To reconcile the swap, you need:

  • The outgoing TXID on Tron.
  • The incoming TXID on the second chain.
  • The exchange reference number that ties them together.

Without the reference number, proving the two transactions are the same trade is difficult. The blockchains do not talk to each other. You have to rely on the service's logs or your own records.

How long swap services keep records and what they can still show you

Most services retain transaction logs for 90 days to 12 months. Some keep them longer for compliance reasons. After that period, the service may delete or archive the data.

If you contact the service with your exchange reference number within the retention window, they can usually provide a CSV export of your swap history. That export includes the rate, fee, and timestamps. After the window closes, they may not be able to help.

This is why you should export your swap history regularly, not just at tax time.

Screenshots versus transaction hashes as proof of a swap

A screenshot shows what you saw on screen at the moment of the swap. It is easy to fake. Tax authorities and auditors treat screenshots as weak evidence. They prefer verifiable on-chain data.

A transaction hash is cryptographic proof. Anyone can look it up on a block explorer and confirm the amount, addresses, and timestamp. It cannot be altered after the fact.

Use both. Save the screenshot for your own reference (the rate, the fee, the confirmation message). Save the transaction hash as your primary proof. If the screenshot and the hash disagree, the hash wins.

What can go wrong and what cannot be undone

A swap can fail if the network is congested, if you send the wrong token type, or if the service's smart contract has a bug. If the swap fails, your tokens return to your wallet after a timeout. That timeout can be minutes or hours.

If the swap succeeds but you receive the wrong amount, you have limited recourse. The smart contract executed as written. The service's customer support may help, but they are under no obligation to reverse a completed swap.

You cannot undo a confirmed transaction on the Tron blockchain. Once the block is final, the tokens are gone from your address. All you can do is record what happened and use that record for your tax calculations.
